A Hair Care Routine for Every Hair Type

Determining hair care just on hair type is a little simple. What we really should say is determining hair care based on your personal hair system because your entire system is involved from the root beneath the surface, the sebaceous glands through the skin, down the shaft, to the very tip. You’ll want to develop a routine that supports the whole system. This is our recommendation for formulating a regular healthy hair care routine that will compliment your scalp and hair. The 4 steps are Groom, Cleanse, Condition, and Style. But how and when you do these steps is informed by your Scalp Surface, Strand Structure, Porosity, and Hair Texture.

To get a deeper understanding of what your natural system is like, try changing your existing routine and challenge the norm by switching to a ‘Noo Poo’ method for a week or so. Ditch all your styling products for just a short time to re-wild your hair system. It’s not required, but it would be an interesting experiment for you. Read this article if you are looking for answers to common hair challenges .

Scalp Surface

The first step is to determine what your natural scalp condition is and how that may inform your routine. When you are determining which scalp type you have, remember to focus oily on the scalp surface and not the hair. For example you could have dry split ends and an oily scalp. To determine which scalp type you have just notice how your scalp feels a couple of days after washing. Notice I said days after. You need to give your scalp a chance to do what it does naturally. Each time you wash, you strip your scalp and your hair.

One thing that is universal no matter what your hair type and scalp condition is you only need to wash your hair once or twice a week. And when you do wash, wash your hair through twice (first time for your debris second time is for your scalp)and generously rinse clear. For the best hair health, you want to make sure your scalp is clean and debris free and the pores are not clogged.

  • Dry
    • Groom – Start the day waking up the scalp and end the day encouraging circulation and stimulating glands with a nice gentle brushing. Use soft brushes, wide toothed combs or hair picks to prevent tugging on scalp. Never brush, comb, or pic dry hair. Lightly moisten with a Hair Hydro or plain water first.
    • Cleanse – Once a week with an Organic Shampoo. In between you could rinse with plain water or use our finishing rinse to refresh your hair and scalp.
    • Condition – Deep conditioning with rich oils once a week and moisture locking Hair Gel as many times as you need during the week. A hair mask or steam treatment once a week may also provide relief.
    • Style – Air dry or use cooler setting on hair dryer. Adopt a hair style that doe not require frequent brushing or combing through the day.
  • Normal
    • Groom – Everyone should start the day with a good groom. Brushing or combing your hair even before you hop in a shower, is a great way to get the scalp stimulated. Never brush, comb, or pic dry hair. Lightly moisten with a Hair Hydro or plain water first.
    • Cleanse – Once or twice a week with an Organic Shampoo.
    • Condition – Condition as the climate or your needs dictate. Once a week I use the Très Spa Hair Gel and that does the trick. In the winter I may do one or two Hair Oil treatment
    • Style – Air drying is best for healthy hair but your scalp can tolerate some heat and is not overly sensitive to brush types and combs.
  • Oily
    • Groom – When you groom your hair think in terms of stimulating your scalp without irritating it so start with either a pic or a wide toothed comb. You also may want to adopt a lighter touch so you don’t end up pulling oil down your hair shaft. Try not to groom to often. Never brush, comb, or pic dry hair. Lightly moisten with a Hair Hydro or plain water first.
    • Cleanse – Twice a week with an Organic Shampoo.
    • Condition – Water based conditioning that wont clog pores or cause oily build up would be the best solution. The Très Spa natural Hair Gel helps lock in moisture and is oil free.
    • Style – Air drying is always best but if you need to use a dryer, keep to the cooler settings. Heat triggers sweating which may trigger the sebaceous glands.

Hair Strand Structure

The thickness of your hair can indicate it’s ability to hold a style or how it will handle products. Strand size has no impact on your routine for cleansing and only a little impact on your conditioning and styling. They way to determine how thick your strands are is fairly easy to do. Take a piece of sewing thread and lay it next to a strand of your hair. If your hair is smaller and barely visible, it’s fine. If it matches size, your medium and if it is larger then you have thick strands.

  • Fine – Chief characteristic complaint is that you can’t get it to do anything and everything makes it go flat.
    • Groom – Brushes tend to get better coverage for fine hair. Follow what your hair texture and scalp needs.
    • Cleanse – Follow what your scalp needs
    • Condition – Stay away from things that may weigh your hair down. Water based conditioning that wont clog pores or cause oily build up would be the best solution. The Très Spa natural Hair Gel helps lock in moisture and is oil free.
    • Style – Fine hair has a hard time holding a style imposed by curling, blow drying, and even ironing. If you have a special occasion that requires every hair in a particular place, you’ll need extra support. You could try doubling up on our natural water based Hair Gel.
  • Medium – I can’t say that I have ever really heard any complaints about medium strand thickness. It’s the most agreeable strand dimension.
    • Groom – Follow what your hair texture and scalp needs.
    • Cleanse – Follow what your scalp needs
    • Condition – There really is no right or wrong here, follow what your scalp needs.
    • Style – You can do just about anything you want.
  • Thick – Thick or coarse hair complaints are usually about how difficult it is to exert control and harness
    • Groom – Follow what your hair texture and scalp needs
    • Cleanse – Follow what your scalp needs
    • Condition – Don’t let the dimension of your hair convince you you need more conditioning, it’s not true.
    • Style – Thick coarse hair really can hold a style like no other as long as you can get it too do what you want. It can handle a bit of heat without wilting so break out the hot rollers, curly, and flat irons.

Porosity

Cuticle lifting from hair shaft

A persons porosity has to do with the porous nature of the cuticle covering your hair. The cuticle is composed of cells stacked like tiles over the hair follicle. It starts in the root and extends all the way over the tip to protect the hair fiber. The level of porosity is inherited but it may change over time. Changes can happen from a number of factors from over use of hair care products to chemical treatments and even environmental impact.

You can easily detect how porous your hair is by taking a couple of strands and floating them in a cup of water. Give it a minute or two and if it floats, then you have low porosity. If your strand sinks to the bottom like a rock then you have highly porous hair. If your hair is anywhere in-between then you have balanced hair. Lucky you!

  • High Porosity – High Porosity has large gaps in the cuticle and readily absorbs moisture. It also releases moisture rapidly which can leave the hair very dry and brittle and more pron to breaking.
    • Groom – Don’t overdo it here. With hair that is on the edge of fragile, you really don’t want to tug and pull at it with excessive grooming.
    • Cleanse – Follow what your scalp needs
    • Condition – Yes please! You want to make sure you are feeding your highly porous hair with enough munition to give it a fighting chance. Leave in conditioning is key here. Deep conditioning with rich oils once a week and moisture locking Hair Gel as many times as you need during the week. A hair mask or steam treatment once a week may also provide relief.
    • Style – Avoid styling practices that further dry your hair or rob it of any defenses. I’m always going to suggest air drying but I know some of you use blow dryers. Just keep it cool.
  • Balanced Porosity – This is the easiest porosity to manage. It is just the right amount of protection with the right amount of allowance to take in external moisture.
    • Groom – Follow what your hair texture and scalp needs.
    • Cleanse – Follow what your scalp needs.
    • Condition – Follow what your scalp needs.
    • Style – While this porosity can handle just about any treatment you want to toss at it, over time and with too much processing, you may cause damage
  • Low Porosity – This hair has a very tightly layered cuticle and the overlapping scales blocks external moisture from getting in. Low porosity hair has a signature high shine to it. It is considered to be the healthiest version.
    • Groom – Follow what your hair texture and scalp needs.
    • Cleanse – Follow what your scalp needs.
    • Condition – Follow what your scalp needs but make sure you are using a leave in conditioning product that will help lock in moisture like our natural Hair Gel that will not build up on the hair and clog pores.
    • Style – It is more resilient to chemicals (not that you would ever use chemicals) so you may need to add a bit of heat to help open the cuticle.

Hair Texture

Texture is pretty easy to detect. Just take a look at your hair after you let it air dry. Your locks will fall into one of these categories.

Hair Type named
  • Straight
    • Groom – You can use just about any brush or comb for this type of hair. Never brush, comb, or pic dry hair. Lightly moisten with a Hair Hydro or plain water first.
    • Cleanse – Follow what your scalp needs.
    • Condition – Follow what your scalp needs. If you feel the need to condition then use a water based product that is lighter once a week with a moisture locking Hair Gel should work fine.
    • Style – Straight hair is pretty determined to be straight hair so beyond a brilliant cut there isn’t much you need to do.
  • Wavy
    • Groom – You can use just about any brush or comb for this type of hair. Never brush, comb, or pic dry hair. Lightly moisten with a Hair Hydro or plain water first.
    • Cleanse – Follow what your scalp needs.
    • Condition – Follow what your scalp needs. If you feel the need to condition then use a water based product that is lighter once a week with a moisture locking Hair Gel should work fine. This will help keep the moisture locked in and keep frizz from happening.
    • Style – Avoid too much heat as this can create a drying trend and rob your hair of valuable nutrients. If wavy hair gets overworked it can easily turn frizzy.
  • Curly
    • Groom – Over grooming can cause damage to those curly locks so be gentle. Use fingers then pic then comb. Never brush, comb, or pic dry hair. Lightly moisten with a Hair Hydro or plain water first.
    • Cleanse – Follow what your scalp needs .
    • Condition – Weekly hair masks and steam treatments with organic hair oils could give you the level of moisturizing you need. Keep your ends conditioned and protected. For leave in without oily build up we recommend the Très Spa natural Hair Gel. This will help wrap a protective layer around your hair and seal in moisture.
    • Style – Avoid heat and only use a diffuser to blow dry. Best to let your hair air dry and use your fingers to gently set your curls in place.
  • Coily to Kinky
    • Groom – Never brush, comb, or pic dry hair. Lightly moisten with a Hair Hydro or plain water first.
    • Cleanse – Use of a hair mask before washing may be beneficial. Definitely try to keep washing to once a week.
    • Condition – Highly textured hair requires extra attention and with all the twists and turns, you may find leave in conditioners to be a life saver. Weekly hair masks and steam treatments with organic hair oils could give you the level of moisturizing you need.

10 Most Common Hair Problems Solved Naturally

Over the years I have had many conversations with people about their hair. Your hair is very responsive to your body and your internal changes. After all, hair is made up of dead keratin cells from your body wrapped in a protective sheath.

What makes up your hair

Your hair will respond different if your internal chemistry adjusts and it will respond if your diet changes. As we age our hair changes as well. It always seems like there is something going on to offer us new challenges for maintaining strong healthy hair. The following list is the most common challenges that people have shared with me and some natural solutions that may be helpful for you. You will note that I have included food. What you put in your body has a direct link to what comes out; Hair, Nails, Skin. So I cannot ignore that. In fact, you can solve a great deal of issues in the kitchen.

If you are experiencing a radical and sudden change in your hair, then please seek a medical professional’s opinion as it could be an indicator of something requiring medical intervention.

Greasy Hair

Overly oily hair could be attributed to over active sebaceous glads. These glands are along the hair shaft and they secret a bit of oil that rises to the surface. When they are performing normally, they produce enough oil to help nourish and strengthen the hair. If your hair is over producing oil try these tips:

  • Add some citrus to your hair care – Citrus juice has a wonderful ability to cleanse without build up or irritation.
  • Wash less – Over washing your hair may continue to strip the hair causing the glands to go into a protective response. Shampoo once or twice a week with our Citrus Sage Conditioning Shampoo is all you should need. And please make sure your rinse well. You want to get all of the shampoo out.
  • Use a light conditioning treatment – Rather than trying to condition with a cream or a lotion, try using a water based conditioning agent like our natural Hair Gel. This will help lock in moisture without causing a build up and without adding oil to your scalp.
  • Try a Clarifying rinse – Using a clarifying rinse in-between shampooing may be just the thing to help give you a fresh clean feeling. You can use any one of our Hair Hydro‘s or create a ACV rinse of your own. It helps to balance the PH of the hair. You can use my ACV rinse recipe here as part of the No Poo routine.
  • Pick it, Comb it, just don’t Brush it! : Using wide toothed combs and picks will help tame and untangle your hair without over stimulating the scalp and sending it into a protective mode.
  • Eat foods rich in Vitamin B – To help regulate the amount of sebum produced. Foods rich in Vit B are Beans and leafy green veggies. Try cutting out all dairy for a bit and see if that helps. Just experiment for 30 days.

Flaky Bits and Dandruff

A build up of debris or overactive cell production can cause flaky bits to fall from your hair. Other potential issues could be psoriasis or exzema. These are 2 serious skin conditions that may require medical intervention in addition to a solid hair care routine. Being a lifetime sufferer of psoriasis, I have found once I got it under control, no more flakes.

  • Wash less – Over washing your hair may continue to strip the hair and water can have a drying effect on skin. Once to twice a week is all the average person ever needs.
  • Keep your scalp clean – It’s really important to keep your scalp clean but you want to make sure you aren’t striping it. The Très Spa Organic Shampoo’s are super-fatted so they condition and clean at the same time.
  • Rinse thoroughly – Those flaky bits may be caused by not rinsing your hair enough when you wash it or from build up of after shampoo product. You don’t need to wash everyday but if you are using Hair Gel and leave in products, you should rinse them from your hair more frequently. Plain water in the shower should do the trick.
  • A good brushing – A through brushing can help pull the dead skin cells and debris away from the scalp keeping the pores open and unclogged.
  • Nourish Scalp – You want to keep the scalp well conditioned and nourished. A good Organic Hair Oil may be just the thing to keep the scalp conditioned without clogging pores. Just don’t go overboard and put on too much or you’ll end up with a whole new set of problems.
  • Try a mask for hair and scalp – A mask can help you exfoliate the scalp, pulling debris and dead skin cells away from the scalp. A nice oatmeal mask can help cool the scalp as well if you have any irritations.
  • De-stress – Stress increases the effect of psoriasis. Try a little Meditation.
  • Eat foods rich in biotin and zinc – This B vitamin and essential mineral have been shown to help. Tomatoes, carrots, pumpkin seeds, and dark chocolate to name a few. You may also want to add a balanced approach to omega fatty acids found in flaxseeds, walnuts, and avocados. Try cutting out all dairy for a bit and see if that helps. Just experiment for 30 days.

Dry Itchy Scalp

Most commonly, itchy scalps come as a side effect of dandruff. But it can be a side effect of many things from over taxing the scalp through things like over shampooing, exposure to chlorinated pools, exposure to UV, exposure to ocean salt water, over styling, and skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema.

  • Keep your scalp clean – It’s really important to keep your scalp clean but you want to make sure you aren’t striping it. The Très Spa Organic Shampoo’s are super-fatted so they condition and clean at the same time.
  • Keep your cool – Sometimes simply cooling off your scalp will bring relief to itchiness. You could use any of our Hair Hydro’s to help cool you off. Moist hair catching a breeze works like a natural air conditioner. If your dry itch is from psoriasis, I created the mist apres Soleil to help me with my skin
  • Oil Steam Treatment – Once a week try a deep moisturizing with a steam heat activated oil treatment.
  • Don’t over brush – Brushing, combing and even picking your hair can cause irritation from tugging at the scalp. Use a gentle soft brush, enough to de-tangle the hair but not scratch the scalp.
  • Eat foods – Foods rich in Vitamin A: orange fruits, vegetables, and sweets potatoes to support skin cells, as well as the circulatory system. Iron rich foods: leafy greens, nuts, tofu, and beans to carry oxygen to the cells. Also add a balanced approach to omega fatty acids found in flaxseeds, walnuts, and avocados.

Split Ends

Split ends can happen when you are to aggressive with your hair from over coloring to over brushing to over styling. Washing too often can also cause your ends to split. Once they split, there is no good way to put them back together. The only choice is to trim them off. The best you can do is prevent them from happening in the first place.

  • Wash less – Over washing your hair may continue to strip the hair causing the glands to go into a protective response. Shampooing once or twice a week with our Organic Conditioning Shampoo is all you should need.
  • Use a post style conditioning treatment – Add a bit of our natural Hair Gel to the ends of your hair after styling. This will help lock in moisture without causing a build up and without adding oil to your scalp.
  • Keep it cool when you style – Rather than use heat when styling your hair, try using the cool setting. Or, better yet, let your hair air dry.
  • Indulge your hair – Give yourself a deeply nourishing Hair Steam once a week. You can create your own customized treatment each time or simply use our Organic Hair Oil.
  • Pick it, Comb it, Brush it! – In that order. Just don’t over do it. Too much fussing causes breaks and splits.
  • Eat foods that support strong hair – Foods rich in Zinc ( whole grains, nuts like pecans and walnuts ), Omega 3s ( flax, hemp seeds, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds ), Iron ( lentils, hemp seeds, parsley, spinach, raisins, tomatoes, leafy greens, or sea vegetables ), Vitamin E ( Sunflower seeds, olives, almonds, and avocados  ), and B Complex ( mushrooms, raw nuts & seeds, leafy greens, winter squash, avocado, and lentils ).

Breaking Hair

  • Eat some Strawberries – Boost up your antioxidant vitamin c intake. Other citrus fruits work as well as peppers. If you can get your hands on guava, dig in. Its super rich in vitamin C
  • Eat foods that support strong hair – Foods rich in Zinc ( whole grains, nuts like pecans and walnuts ), Omega 3s ( flax, hemp seeds, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds ), Iron ( lentils, hemp seeds, parsley, spinach, raisins, tomatoes, leafy greens, or sea vegetables ), Vitamin E ( Sunflower seeds, olives, almonds, and avocados  ), and B Complex ( mushrooms, raw nuts & seeds, leafy greens, winter squash, avocado, and lentils ).

Frizz

Frizzy fly away hair happens when the hair moisture level drops below what would be normal for your hair. It could be seasonal, diet related, or metabolic.

  • See the advise for Split ends
  • We cannot stress enough the advantage to having our natural Hair Gel to help defend against out of control fly away frizz

Limp Lifeless Hair

Lifeless limp hair may be the result of over worked hair or it could be that you are using too much product on your hair. Usually when I hear this complaint it goes hand in hand with people who have thin fine hair.

  • Keep your scalp clean – It’s really important to keep your scalp clean but you want to make sure you aren’t striping it. The Très Spa Organic Shampoo’s are super-fatted so they condition and clean at the same time.
  • A matter of Style – Resist the urge to over style your hair with heated irons and other tools. First, your hair may suffer more damage as a result. Second, your hair probably wont hold the styling without adding a lot of product.
  • Rinse and rinse again – It’s really important to not let build up occur on fine hair. Even the slightest excess can weigh heavy on your hair so make sure you rinse well.
  • Use a light conditioning treatment – Rather than trying to condition with a cream or a lotion, try using a water based conditioning agent like our natural Hair Gel. This will help lock in moisture without causing a build up and without adding oil to your scalp.
  • Eat foods that support strong hair – Foods rich in Zinc ( whole grains, nuts like pecans and walnuts ), Omega 3s ( flax, hemp seeds, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds ), Iron ( lentils, hemp seeds, parsley, spinach, raisins, tomatoes, leafy greens, or sea vegetables ), Vitamin E ( Sunflower seeds, olives, almonds, and avocados  ), and B Complex ( mushrooms, raw nuts & seeds, leafy greens, winter squash, avocado, and lentils ).

Hair Fall/Thinning

If you find yourself loosing a little bit of hair every day, you are not alone. We all shed a bit of hair every day. Anywhere between 50 to 100 strands each day is quite common. Of course, if you start taking medications or change your food in a drastic way, you may experience a temporary increase in loss but it should subside. Hair growth goes through phases. The first is, obviously, growth followed by a resting period and then a time where older hair is shed to make ready for new hair growth. And so it goes.

If you find you are suddenly losing hair at an alarming rate, please seek a doctors care. It could be a sign that something else is going on. In the meantime, the following steps may help you foster strong healthy natural hair.

  • Wash less – Over washing your hair may continue to strip the hair and water can have a drying effect on skin. Once to twice a week is all the average person ever needs. The Très Spa Organic Shampoo’s are super-fatted so they condition and clean at the same time.
  • Rinse thoroughly – You want to make sure you are keeping the scalp pores open and clear making it easy for new growth.
  • Use a light conditioning treatment – Rather than trying to condition with a cream or a lotion, try using a water based conditioning agent like our natural Hair Gel. This will help lock in moisture without causing a build up and without adding oil to your scalp.
  • Massage, the ultimate in stimulation – A proper head massage entourages blood flow and stimulates cell regeneration. Plus, it just feels amazing.
  • Eat a bean or two – Rich in Iron and proteins to help encourage growth of strong healthy hair.
  • Eat foods that support strong hair – Foods rich in Zinc ( whole grains, nuts like pecans and walnuts ), Omega 3s ( flax, hemp seeds, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds ), Iron ( lentils, hemp seeds, parsley, spinach, raisins, tomatoes, leafy greens, or sea vegetables ), Vitamin E ( Sunflower seeds, olives, almonds, and avocados  ), and B Complex ( mushrooms, raw nuts & seeds, leafy greens, winter squash, avocado, and lentils ).

Color or Bleach Treated Hair

The torture we put ourselves through is mind boggling. I’ve never been a strong supporter of using chemicals to alter my hairs natural color. I tried it once, but I wouldn’t do it again. It’s terrible for the environment and it enforces the wrong message from me to me. It is as if I am telling myself that I am not good enough the way I am and I am trying to get away from that old message.

But I get it, lots of people love to get their hair colored. The good news is that there are some planet friendly options out there. There are even some fun temporary colors. I’ve used this to make my hair purple and teal for a special event. Color treating your hair can be expensive and time consuming so you want to make sure you preserve it for as long as you can. Here are some ideas to help you retain the color longer and restore any damage the color treatment may have caused.

  • Wash less – Over washing your hair may continue to strip the hair and water can have a drying effect on skin. Once to twice a week is all the average person ever needs. The Très Spa Organic Shampoo’s are super-fatted so they condition and clean at the same time.
  • Indulge your hair – Give yourself a deeply nourishing Hair Steam once a week. You can create your own customized treatment each time or simply use our Organic Hair Oil.
  • A light leave in conditioning – Use a light water based natural Hair Gel to lock those locks and protect them from further damage. Our gel gently coast your hair shaft without building up on the scalp.
  • Eat foods that support strong hair – Foods rich in Zinc ( whole grains, nuts like pecans and walnuts ), Omega 3s ( flax, hemp seeds, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds ), Iron ( lentils, hemp seeds, parsley, spinach, raisins, tomatoes, leafy greens, or sea vegetables ), Vitamin E ( Sunflower seeds, olives, almonds, and avocados  ), and B Complex ( mushrooms, raw nuts & seeds, leafy greens, winter squash, avocado, and lentils ).

Grey Hair

Personally, I don’t see graying hair as a challenge that needs to be overcome. If you are lucky, you are living long enough to allow the grey to come. You may find, however, they grey hair coming in is a bit different in tinsel strength and texture. It’s not just the color that changes, the hair changes and it may be stiffer then what you were accustomed to and more prone to thinning and breaking.

  • Wash less often – You really can get by with shampooing only once a week with our Organic Conditioning Shampoo
  • Condition as needed – You may find you need a bit more conditioning as you age. For deep conditioning try our Organic Hair Oil and for a lighter conditioning use one of our Hair Gels. It’s a gel that does more than add style.
  • Scalp Massage – Give yourself a scalp massage from time to time. This encourages improved circulation and stimulates cell regeneration. Plus, it just feels amazing.
  • Brush Gently – There is no need to go ripping through your hair, go easy. Be gentle with yourself. Use a hair pick then step your way to a brush. I never start with a brush. No matter how long or short my hair is, I have always started with a hair pick to de-tangle my hair and most times, this is all I use.
  • Eat foods that support strong hair – No more than ever is the time for you to get your foods right. The overall health benefits for whole plant foods is too strong for you to ignore them. Foods rich in Zinc ( whole grains, nuts like pecans and walnuts ), Omega 3s ( flax, hemp seeds, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds ), Iron ( lentils, hemp seeds, parsley, spinach, raisins, tomatoes, leafy greens, or sea vegetables ), Vitamin E ( Sunflower seeds, olives, almonds, and avocados  ), and B Complex ( mushrooms, raw nuts & seeds, leafy greens, winter squash, avocado, and lentils ).

This bares repeating: If you are experiencing a radical and sudden change in your hair, then please seek a medical professional’s opinion as it could be an indicator of something requiring medical intervention.

Plant Based Planet Friendly Hair Care

Hair Care for the Green Warrior

Who doesn’t want to look good and feel good? I think we all do. Inside that collective ‘We’ there is a subset of people who want the same as everyone else, but they have a deeper desire. One to make a difference for themselves, but more importantly, for the planet. They are what I affectionately call Green Warriors. A Green Warrior is someone who is interested in making personal choices that help make a positive impact on the planet in real ways. It doesn’t mean they are perfect, but they try to make a difference where they can.

They are the ones who are willing to break the cycle of short single use and long disposal impact for long and multi use with minimal to zero disposal impact. Even with the smallest choice, we can make a profound difference to reduce global devastation and improve natural habitats. Our Green Warriors inform our approach to Hair Care at Très Spa. This is who we created our unique,a s close to nature as possible, hair care line for. We can all be Green Warriors.

Packaging is only part of the story

The simple choice of using our solid shampoo that is organic and 100% pure plant powered makes a difference. The first obvious difference is the fact it’s not in a bottle so there is less plastic waste and less pollution in creating plastic bottles that could end up in waste heaps.* But to be truly planet friendly, we believe you have to dig deeper and consider the ingredients that go into the finished products. Ingredients that are synthesized in a lab could have upstream and downstream adverse impact. What happens to an ecosystem when the plastic and other pollutants in that hair gel leaches into the water system? What kind of chemicals had to go into creating the super synthesized hair product and what was the refuse from their manufacturing? Don’t even get me started on the problems with fragrances!

Plants have power

We rely on plants in all of our hair care products. With the exception of the 1% preservative in our amazing hair gel, the only ingredients you will find are plants. Plants have amazing power and are perfectly balanced in their natural state. They have a bounty of nutrients that are extremely beneficial in supporting our health. The materials are easily harvested and can effortlessly be assimilated by humans. Perhaps this is why, for many centuries, plants were our only medicine. For the hair care, we carefully select the plants to work in harmony with each other to provide the maximum nutritional benefit that hair needs. Plants are either cold pressed, steamed, or minimally processed in order to extract the botanical matter. We harness all that natural power to formulate our full line of hair care: Organic Shampoo, Hair Hydro, Organic Hair Oil, and our natural Hair Gel.

A Hair Gel unlike any other

What is Hair Gel

First off, lets talk about what a gel is for. A gels purpose is to help style and hold your hair in place all day. All gels are a “leave in” product, meaning they are not meant to be rinsed out after application. You can just style your hair and go. You can use a gel to tame or add firming hold to your styled hair. They can help shape everything from short hair styles to long locks. If you have never tried one before, try ours. We are sure you will be amazed!

Why is Très Spa’s Hair Gel unique

The biggest differentiation for any product is in the formula. Here is where you really see a stark difference in the Très Spa Hair Gel verses everyone else out there. Très Spa hair gel contains 100% plant-derived, non-toxic, and nutrient-rich ingredients. Simple, clean and very versatile.  All of our gels are safe for the planet and will not harm even the most delicate environment.

If you have ever read the ingredient list on a bottle or jar of just about every other Hair Gel out there, you will see a litany of ingredients. The majority of these ingredients are synthesized compounds created in a laboratory. Many of which may cause build up on your scalp and even drying of your hair shaft making them pron to breakage.

Who is it for

Anyone. When we formulated this product, we formulated for the planet first. We were not thinking of solving only one persons hair care need, we were thinking of the common needs for anyone with hair. We all share a need to have a little extra support for our hair. Something to help give a little extra protection from the environment and to feed our hair with a bit of extra nourishment. So the Très Spa Hair Gel is really for anyone looking for a planet friendly plant derived hair conditioning and styling solution. Men, women, and young children no matter what your hair type is.

How do you use it

It’s always best to apply the gel to wet or moist hair. The wetness helps to spread the gel for even coverage from tip to root. Start with about a quarter size dollop in the palm of your hand. You can add more if you want/need. If your hair gets dry, just spritz some water or one of our Hair Hydro to re-dampen.

  • For curly hair: Scrunch upward toward scalp when your hair is wet, and once dry, scrunch again to release your beautiful curls.
  • For straight to wavy hair: Start out with less and make sure your hair is moist to wet be fore applying. Work from tips to crown and style: air dry, blow dry, curl, etc.
  • For a softer look: Massage from tip to scalp when your hair is wet then continue to manipulate your hair as it drys and you will have a soft controlled texture.
  • For a “wet” look: Massage from tip to scalp when your hair is wet, comb your hair to the the desired style and let dry. You hair will feel stiff and look sleek/wet. To easily soften it, just massage your hair and the stiffness will relax.
  • For short hair: Apply from tips to scalp then style hair. For stronger hold apply a second coating of gel but avoid using to much. Since this is made from plants and not plastic, too much may cause flaking as the hair dries.
  • For long hair: Apply to tips and ends of hair. You can apply to the entire shaft of hair as this will not clog your scalp pores.

The origin story

I have tried just about every hair style imaginable to make sense of the hair I was born with. I’ve had it super short hair, pixie cuts, permed hair, layered hair, feathered hair, and flowing straight down my back in one long luxurious mane. For the past decade or so, I have had a habit of growing my hair out and then cutting it to donate to Wigs For Kids (a fantastic charity).

Every time I get my hair cut, my wild cowlicks come to life and I am reminded of how complicated my hair can be. It is next to impossible to tame my hair without extra help. After my last hair harvest, I was determined to develop a planet friendly solution that would help control and condition my newly shortened untamed hair. I didn’t want the weight of even the lightest of Hair Oils and I needed more than what the hydros could do. I needed a product that could wrap around my hair and not get in the way of nature. A leave in product that offered condition and control.

After many designs and some interesting experiments, the Très Spa Hair Gel was born. It’s been a labor of love and something I’ve been working on for over a year. Beta test results are in and the feedback has been in resounding support. We tested it on a full spectrum of hair types and it worked for all of them.

No Poo Hair Care

First a little history

The birth of commercial liquid shampoo, the way many of us have been raised with and taught, is fairly new. The first commercial bottled liquid shampoo, similar to what we know today, was introduced around 1927 in Europe and was developed by a German Chemist. It really took off in the 30’s when Procter & Gamble brought us Drene with the first synthetic surfactants (yes it’s detergent), removing any trace of the natural soap from shampoo.

Enter the post World War II era and the age of super convenient products and bottled shampoo was off to the races. Cheap to manufacture and easy to shelve, shampoo became a very lucrative business. Especially when super models started to convince us we needed to shampoo several times a week.

What the heck is No Poo?

It is a method of cleansing the scalp and hair without using bottled shampoo. No Poo is not really new, but it it started to experience a resurgence of interest for the community concerned about the global impact of the waist from plastic detergent bottles. The battle cry to “Ditch the Bottle” is a valiant attempt to turn the tide on global warming and environmental destruction by creating less waist.

The other benefit is the huge cost savings since the ingredients are fairly inexpensive and many of us can find them in our kitchen cupboards. No Poo just means no shampoo so even just washing with plain water is considered No Poo. You cannot get easier than that. I’ve never tried it and I don’t know anyone who cleans their hair with only water. The closest I got was when I developed the Hair Hydro’s and those worked fine for a time and I still use them on a regular basis as a natural detangler to moisten my hair before brushing or styling.

The most common No Poo treatment is to use a combination of baking soda followed by an apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse. The baking soda is the chemical used to break up oil and debris that may be close to the scalp and tangled in your hair follicles. The ACV rinse is there to neutralize the soda and soften the hair.

Before you get started, this is what you will need on hand:

  • Plenty of fresh flowing water to rinse with. You’ll be rinsing more than once.
  • Towel to pat dry your hair after
  • Baking soda
  • ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) Personally I only use Bragg’s ACV it has a solid reputation you can trust
  • If you plan on washing in the shower: Plastic spray bottles or plastic tall cups to pour from. If you are basin washing, then glass jars work just fine. I will never recommend glass in the bathroom and never in the shower.

The Baking Soda & ACV No Poo Method. Use it only 1 time a week. Why? Because that is all you really need but also because it can be a bit harsh if used to often. Use the water only or our Hair Hydro’s in between to help keep a fresh clean feeling through the week. You could also try a dry shampoo.

  1. Dilute the Baking soda in water

Mix this in the spray bottle, pouring cup, or glass jar you will be using
Start with a 1 Tablespoon baking soda to 1 cup water ratio. If you have super oily hair, you may increase the amount of baking soda.
The purpose of the baking soda is to break up the oil close to the scalp. That is what alkali’s do, break up acids.

  2. Dilute the ACV in water

Mix this in the spray bottle, pouring cup, or glass jar you will be using
I have found a 1 part ACV to 4 part water ratio works best for me. You could experiment with this if you feel you want more kick then try 1 to 3 part ratio.
The purpose of this step is to neutralize any residual baking soda, balance your PH level, and to soften the hair.

  3. Step in the shower or wrap a towel on your shoulder

Personally I prefer to just step into the shower but maybe you don’t want to or you can’t for some reason, you can wrap a towel on your shoulder to catch and drizzle.

  4. Apply the baking soda and water to your scalp

Either pour or spritz the Baking soda dilution to your scalp and massage it a bit. You want to work it over your entire scalp to get the oils loosened up. You do not need to cover your hair shaft, in fact avoid covering the hair shaft.

  5. Rinse generously

You want to remove any remnants of of the baking soda

  6. Spritz or pour on the ACV

Now this one you want to get to your scalp and all the way out to the tips of your hair. A good drenching is in order. Don’t panic about the smell, it really will fade. Massage it in and give it a few moments before rinsing it out.
If you are basin washing your hair, apply the ACV and wrap the hair up for a steam treatment before removing. I would shorten the steam time to 10 minutes. You could experiment with going longer if you want.

  7. Rinse generously

Rinse out the ACV dilution. This will help remove some of the scent but as your hair drys, more of the scent will fade.

  8. Style and go!

If you are really worried about the scent, you could use our Hair Hydro or one of our Aromatic Mists to add a natural scent.
